M.W.Br.Dr. Ramakumar Raghupathy
M.W. Grand Master G.L.S.I |
M.W. Grand Lodge of South India
Historical Background
During 18th century England had established their political and military influence throughout the world by way of establishing trading companies, crown colonies, dominions and occupied territories. Wherever their civil and army Officers settled, they started Masonic Lodges.
In India, the honour of receiving Craft Masonry goes to Calcutta in the year 1730 A.D. The Lodge met, in the East India Rooms, Fort William and was given No. 72(UGLE). Till the year 1961, only Lodges under English Constitution were functioning in India. It goes without saying that the Lodges in India had regularity of origin by fulfilling the norms

|
In 1961 there was a concordat entered into between the Craft Lodges functioning in India on the one hand and U.G.L.E on the Other, whereunder, the Brethren who are members in the Lodge had an option either to continue under U.G.L.E or to come under G.L of India. From 1961 U.G.L.E agreed not to warrant any new Lodge under English/constitution in India. Reciprocally the Brethren can exercise option to be a member in both constitutions.
G.L of India amended its Constitution in July 1992 abolishing dual membership in English and Indian Grand Lodge. This action on the part of G.L.I was taken as a unilateral breach of concordat entered into in 1961 between these two constitutions and U.G.L.E derecognized G.L.I.
Consecration of G.L.S.I.
This unilateral action on the part of G.L.I to breach the Concordat and thereby ab8lish dual membership was a rude shock to the principle universal of Brotherhood. It renders Masonic Fraternity meaningless. At this juncture, in order to uphold the principle of universal Brotherhood, the senior members of U.G.L.E and G.L.I proposed to consecrate a new Grand Lodge under the banner G.L.S.I.M.W.G.M of G.L of upper India and his team of Officers conscreted G.L.S.I on 29.5.1995 at Coimbatore, having jurisdiction over Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Pondicerry States.
Rapid Growth
Having been conscreted in 1995, the G.L.S.I has made great strides in Masonic activities. It had today 16 craft Lodges besides sides degrees - chapter, Mark and Ram. The brethren of G.L.S.I have recived the Srinivas Gopal condlave and Rock conclave under English constitution and has become active.
